Valerie Kimberlin
Des Moines, IA
My name is Valerie. I am a proud trans woman and a wartime
veteran studying journalism at Iowa State University.
I earned an Associate of Arts Degree at the Defense Language
Institute while serving as an Arabic Cryptologic Linguist in the
United States Marine Corps. During my time in service, I supported
Operation Inherent Resolve as an Arabic Translator and Analyst.
My intelligence products were used by decision-makers in the highest
echelons of government to defend American service members and
our allies against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
I majored in journalism and mass communication at The George Washington University in D.C., utilizing the Post-911 G.I. Bill and Yellow Ribbon Scholarship. Much of my coursework was focused on digital media production, and I discovered a passion for still and motion photography. I worked as an associate editor for The GW Hatchet, reporting audiovisual stories and publishing in WordPress. I also produced "Getting to the Bottom of It," The Hatchet's weekly podcast.
I gigged as a photographer as often as possible, shooting galas, weddings and portraits, as well as promotional material for a local art collective. My favorite photo genres are event coverage, nature and boudoir.
